One case size can hide two screens. A 42mm Series 3 has 312 × 390 pixels and 740 sq mm of display. A 42mm Series 11 has 374 × 446 pixels and 970 sq mm, which is 31% more.

Which Apple Watch has the biggest screen?

The Ultra 4 and Ultra 3 share the biggest screen: 422 × 514 pixels and 1245 sq mm (1.93 sq in). Worked out at 326 PPI, it is 32.9 mm wide, 40.0 mm tall and 2.04 in on the diagonal.

The first two Ultra models are smaller at 1185 sq mm. That is less than the 1196 sq mm of the 46mm Series 11, even though the Ultra case is 49mm tall.

Which Apple Watch has the smallest screen?

The 38mm Series 3, Series 2 and Series 1 have the smallest screen, at 272 × 340 pixels and 563 sq mm (0.87 sq in). Apple does not print a pixel density for these models, so we do not work out a diagonal for them.

Of the four newest models on Apple's list, the 40mm SE 3 has the smallest screen at 759 sq mm. That is 35% more than the 38mm screen, and 1.56 in on the diagonal.

How much bigger is the 46mm screen than the 42mm?

On the Series 12, Series 11 and Series 10, the 46mm screen has 23% more display area than the 42mm. It is 32.4 mm wide and 38.6 mm tall, against 29.1 mm by 34.7 mm.

The cases differ by less. On the Series 11, the 46mm case is 39 mm wide and the 42mm case is 36 mm wide.

The 44mm SE 3 is a close match for the 42mm Series 11. Its screen has 977 sq mm against 970 sq mm, with 368 × 448 pixels against 374 × 446.

What does the mm in the case size mean?

It is the height of the case, top to bottom. Apple lists the 46mm Series 11 at 46 mm tall, 39 mm wide and 9.7 mm deep.

The early names were rounded. The 38mm Series 3 is 38.6 mm tall and its 42mm case is 42.5 mm tall, while the first generation 42mm case is 42 mm.

The screen sits inside a border, so it is always shorter than the case. On the 46mm Series 11, the screen is about 38.6 mm tall, or 84% of the case height.

How have Apple Watch screens grown?

The small case went from 563 sq mm at 38mm to 759 at 40mm, 904 at 41mm and 970 at 42mm. That is 72% more screen in a case named only 4mm larger.

The large case grew from 740 sq mm at 42mm to 977 at 44mm, 1143 at 45mm and 1196 at 46mm. Apple's Series 5 page calls its display over 30% larger than the Series 3.

Brightness grew too. The Series 1 lists 450 nits, while the Ultra 4, Ultra 3 and Ultra 2 reach 3000 nits.

How do we work out the size in inches?

Apple gives the resolution and the display area, but no diagonal. Where Apple also prints 326 pixels per inch, we divide the pixels by 326 to get the width, height and diagonal.

The display area is a little smaller than width times height, because the corners are rounded. For the 46mm screen, width times height gives 1253 sq mm, while Apple lists 1196 sq mm.

Apple's page for the Apple Watch (1st generation) lists no resolution, so it has no screen row here. Its cases were 38mm and 42mm, like the Series 1.

How do Apple Watch screens compare with an iPhone?

The smallest iPhone in our chart, the iPhone SE (3rd gen), has a 4.7 in screen. That is 2.3 times the diagonal of the biggest Apple Watch.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches 6.9 in. See every model in our iPhone screen sizes chart.
