What do the resolution names mean?

The number in names like 1080p and 1440p is the height in pixels. 4K and 8K count the width instead, roughly 4,000 and 8,000 pixels across.

Resolution says nothing about physical size. A 1080p laptop and a 1080p TV have the same pixels, spread over very different screens.

How sharp is each resolution on a real screen?

It depends on the screen size, measured in pixels per inch (PPI). 1080p on a 27 inch monitor gives 82 PPI, while 1440p on the same screen gives 109 PPI.

Screen1080p PPI1440p PPI4K PPI
14 in laptop 157 210 315
24 in monitor 92 122 184
27 in monitor 82 109 163
32 in monitor 69 92 138
55 in TV 40 53 80

With 20/20 vision you stop seeing single pixels at 42.1 in (107.0 cm) from a 27 inch 1080p screen. It drops to 31.6 in (80.3 cm) at 1440p and 21.1 in (53.5 cm) at 4K.

How do I check my screen resolution?

This page reads it for you above. To check it in your system settings:

  1. Windows: Settings > System > Display > Display resolution. The one marked "Recommended" is your screen's real resolution.
  2. Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Macs show a scaled size, so the panel itself may have more pixels.
  3. iPhone: there is no setting for it. Find your model on the iPhone screen size list.

What is the best resolution for a monitor?

The best resolution depends on the screen size. Aim for a pixel density that keeps text crisp at your normal distance. These pairings are the usual sweet spots:

  • 24 inch: 1920 × 1080 gives 92 PPI, fine for everyday work at arm’s length.
  • 27 inch: 2560 × 1440 gives 109 PPI, a common choice for work and games.
  • 32 inch: 3840 × 2160 gives 138 PPI, so text stays sharp on a bigger panel.

Higher is sharper, but it asks more of a graphics card in games. For office work, a 27 inch 4K screen with 150% scaling gives very crisp text.

What resolution do most laptops have?

Many Windows laptops use 1920 × 1080, and newer models often use 1920 × 1200, which adds a little height for documents. Thin and premium laptops go higher, such as 2560 × 1664 on the 13 inch MacBook Air. Windows laptops usually start at 125% or 150% scaling, so text looks larger than the pixel count suggests.

What is 5K resolution?

5K is 5120 × 2880, about 14.7 million pixels. On a 27 inch screen it gives 218 PPI, twice the pixels in each direction of a 27 inch 1440p monitor. Apple uses it on its 27 inch displays, so the Mac can draw everything at double detail.

More questions about screen resolution

What is the most common screen resolution?

1920 × 1080 (1080p) is one of the most common resolutions on monitors and laptops. Phones and newer laptops use higher, denser resolutions.

Is 1440p the same as 2K?

Monitor makers often call 2560 × 1440 "2K", though cinema 2K is 2048 × 1080. When a monitor says 2K, check the pixel count.

How many pixels does 4K have compared with 8K?

4K has 8.3 million pixels and 8K has 33.2 million, 4× as many. You only see the difference on very large screens or from close up.

Why does my screen report a different resolution?

Browsers report the physical pixels of your display, which is what this page uses. Windows and macOS scaling can make the desktop look like a lower resolution.

Is 1920 × 1080 good enough?

On a 15.6 inch laptop it gives 141 PPI and looks sharp, and on a 24 inch monitor it is fine at arm’s length. At 27 inches it drops to 82 PPI, so text looks soft and 1440p is the better choice.

Can I test my screen resolution online?

Yes. This page reads it in your browser and highlights your row in the chart. If the reading is lower than your screen’s full resolution, your system is set lower, so pick the Recommended option in display settings.

How we measure

Megapixels are width × height ÷ 1,000,000. The vs 1080p column divides each pixel count by 1920 × 1080. Your screen's resolution is read in your browser as screen size × device pixel ratio and never sent anywhere.
