White Screen Test

A plain white screen shows faults that hide in everyday use. Dead pixels appear as black dots, and uneven patches or a color tint are easy to see.

One full-screen color. Click, tap or press Esc to end.

What does a white screen show?

Anything that blocks or dims the light. Look for these four things.

  • Dead pixels: small black dots that stay in the same place.
  • Dust and smudges: marks that move or wipe off when you clean the glass.
  • Tint: one side looking warmer, more yellow, or cooler, more blue, than the other.
  • Uneven brightness: darker corners or cloudy patches across the white.

How do I run a white screen test?

Clean the screen first, then follow these steps. The whole check takes about a minute.

  1. Turn off night mode and any blue light filter.
  2. Set brightness to the level you normally use.
  3. Start the test and look from straight in front, about arm’s length away.
  4. Scan the screen in rows from top to bottom, then click or press Esc to finish.

Can I use a white screen as a light?

Yes. A full white screen gives an even, soft light for a video call or for finding something in the dark. Turn brightness up, and expect a laptop or phone battery to drain faster.

Can I use a white screen for tracing?

Yes, a tablet or laptop showing full white works as a simple light box. Lay the screen flat, turn brightness all the way up and place thin paper over it. The drawing underneath shows through clearly.

Put a clear plastic sheet between the paper and the screen. A pen pressed hard on bare glass can scratch it, and on an LCD it can leave marks in the panel. Tape the paper to the sheet, not to the screen, and switch off auto lock so the screen stays on.

Can I view an X-ray film on a white screen?

You can hold a film against a bright white screen to see it, much like a hospital light box. It is fine for a quick look at your own copy. It is not a medical viewer, so leave the reading to your doctor.

How do I get a warm or off-white screen?

This test shows pure white. For a softer, warmer light, use the warm setting your device already has. Turn on Night light in Windows, Night Shift on a Mac, iPhone or iPad, or the eye comfort setting on an Android phone.

Each one shifts white toward yellow, which many people find easier on the eyes at night. Turn it off again before you check the screen for tint, since it changes the color on purpose.

How do I tell a dead pixel from dust?

Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth and look again. Dust and smudges move or vanish, while a dead pixel stays in exactly the same spot.

What should I do if I find a fault?

Note where it is, and take a photo while the screen still shows white. Then check the seller’s dead pixel policy, since many accept a return only above a set number of faulty pixels.

For a fuller check, run the dead pixel test, which steps through several colors. A pixel stuck on one color can hide on white.

Questions

Is a little uneven brightness normal?

Some unevenness at the edges is common, especially on large screens. If a patch is clearly visible in normal use, check the seller’s return policy.

Can a white screen damage my display?

No. White is an ordinary color for any screen. On an OLED, just avoid leaving any still image up for hours.

Why does my white look slightly blue or yellow?

That is the screen’s color temperature. Night mode, blue light filters and picture presets all change it, so turn them off before you judge the tint.

How do I get a full white screen with nothing else showing?

Start the test, which switches the browser to full screen and hides tabs, bars and the taskbar. Click, tap or press Esc to leave. On an iPhone, Safari keeps its own bars showing.
