iPhone Wallpaper Size

Updated

The right wallpaper size for an iPhone is its screen resolution in pixels. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, 17 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max, that is 1320 × 2868 pixels.

What size is an iPhone wallpaper and lock screen for each model?

Models with the same screen share a row, and each row links to its first model. Make the image at least this many pixels wide and tall, upright, so it fills the screen without blur.

Which wallpaper size works on every iPhone?

Use the biggest size, 1320 × 2868. Smaller iPhones scale it down, so it stays sharp on every model.

The iPhone SE, 8 and 8 Plus screens have a wider 16:9 shape, so they trim the top and bottom of a tall wallpaper. Keep the main subject near the middle.

How do I make a photo fit my iPhone screen?

Crop it to the screen’s shape before you set it. Three steps cover most photos:

  1. Find your model in the table and note its wallpaper size.
  2. Crop the photo to that width and height, or to the same shape, in Photos or any editor.
  3. Open Settings, then Wallpaper, add the photo, and pinch to fine-tune where it sits.

Where does the clock cover my lock screen wallpaper?

The date and time sit in the top third, and the flashlight and camera buttons sit at the bottom. Leave faces and text clear of those areas.

On the iPhone 17, the top third is the first 874 pixels of 2622. On the iPhone SE (3rd gen), it is the first 445 of 1334.

What file type should an iPhone wallpaper be?

JPEG, PNG and HEIC all work. PNG keeps flat colors and text crisp, while JPEG and HEIC make smaller files for photos.

What wallpaper size do the newest iPhones use?

Use the full screen resolution of your model. For the newest iPhones, that is:

Each model page shows the screen in inches and centimeters too. To compare two models side by side, use our iPhone size comparison.

How do I find which iPhone I have?

Open Settings, then General, then About, and read Model Name. Then find that model in the table above for its wallpaper size.

If you want to check the screen size by hand as well, our guide on how to check your phone’s screen size shows how.

Why does my wallpaper move or zoom in?

iOS can zoom a wallpaper slightly so it shifts as you tilt the phone. That zoom crops the edges and can make a small photo look soft.

To stop the movement, open Settings, then Accessibility, then Motion, and turn on Reduce Motion. Then set the wallpaper again and pinch it into place.

Should my lock screen and home screen use the same wallpaper?

They can, since both use the same size. The home screen is covered by app icons and the dock, so busy detail gets lost there.

A simple or blurred picture behind the icons keeps them easy to read. Save the detailed photo for the lock screen, below the clock.

How do I make a wallpaper on a computer?

Any image editor works, as long as you start at the right size. Follow these steps:

  1. Create a new image at your model’s wallpaper size from the table.
  2. Keep the key parts away from the top, where the clock sits, and the bottom edge.
  3. Export it as a JPEG or PNG at the same size.
  4. Send it to your iPhone and save it to Photos, then set it from Settings.

How do I set a new wallpaper on my iPhone?

Save the image to Photos first. Then follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings and tap Wallpaper, then Add New Wallpaper.
  2. Tap Photos and pick your image.
  3. Pinch and drag to place it, then tap Add.
  4. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both screens, or Customize Home Screen to change the second one.

You can also press and hold the lock screen, then tap the plus button.

Why does my wallpaper look blurry?

A blurry wallpaper is almost always an image smaller than the screen. The phone has to stretch it, and stretched pixels look soft.

Images saved from messages and social apps are often shrunk on the way. Use the original file, and check its size is at least the resolution in the table above for your model.

How do I resize a photo to wallpaper size?

First crop it to the screen’s shape, then scale it to the exact size. The iPhone 17 screen is 1206 × 2622, so crop to that ratio before you resize.

Our aspect ratio calculator gives the crop size for any photo. The resolution scale calculator then works out the final width and height.

Does an iPhone wallpaper work on an Android phone?

Usually, but it may be cropped. Android phones come in many shapes, so the wallpaper is trimmed at the top, bottom or sides to fit.

Find your Android phone’s exact resolution with our live check in what resolution is my phone. Then make the wallpaper at that size.

What makes a good iPhone wallpaper photo?

A few simple rules keep the lock screen clear and the home screen tidy:

  • Keep the main subject in the middle third, away from the clock and the dock.
  • Leave a calm area at the top, so the time stays easy to read.
  • Choose an image at least as large as your screen, from the table above.
  • Avoid busy detail behind the app icons on the home screen.

Questions

Does a wallpaper need to be exactly the screen size?

No, but it should be at least that size. A larger image is scaled down, and you can pinch to choose the part shown.

Can I use a landscape photo as a wallpaper?

Yes, but the phone crops it to fit the tall screen. Pick a photo with the main subject near the middle.

What size is an iPhone 17 wallpaper?

The iPhone 17 wallpaper size is 1206 × 2622 pixels, the full resolution of its screen.

What is the iPhone 17 Pro Max wallpaper size?

It is 1320 × 2868 pixels, the full resolution of its 6.9 inch screen.

Why does my wallpaper look blurry?

The photo is probably smaller than the screen, so the iPhone has to stretch it. Use a photo at least as big as your model’s wallpaper size.

Do all iPhones use the same wallpaper shape?

No. Models with Face ID are taller and narrower than the iPhone 8 and SE, so a wallpaper made for one crops differently on the other.

What is the iPhone wallpaper size in inches?

Wallpapers are set in pixels, not inches. The screen size in inches only tells you how big the picture looks in your hand.

Can I use a horizontal photo as a wallpaper?

Yes, but the iPhone crops it to a tall shape, so most of the photo is cut off. A tall photo keeps more of the picture.

Does a bigger file make a sharper wallpaper?

Only up to the screen’s resolution. Past that, the iPhone scales the picture down, so the extra pixels are not shown.

How we measure

Each wallpaper size is the screen resolution Apple lists for that model, in portrait. The shape is the resolution reduced to a ratio, rounded to the nearest common name.
