What is the difference between real pixels and CSS pixels?
Real pixels are the dots on the screen. CSS pixels are bigger layout units, so text stays the same size on sharp and less sharp screens.
Real pixels = CSS pixels × pixel ratio. The iPhone 17 is 402 × 874 CSS pixels at 3x, which makes 1206 × 2622.
What resolution is each iPhone?
Models with the same screen share a row, and each row links to its first model.
Resolutions are from Apple’s tech specs pages, and CSS sizes from Xcode’s simulators. Last checked 11 October 2026.
How do I check the resolution on Android?
The box above works on any phone. To check in Settings as well, follow these steps:
- Open Settings, then Display.
- Look for Screen resolution, which many Samsung phones show.
- If it is not there, find the model under About phone and search its specs.
Why do newer iPhones use a pixel ratio of 3?
A ratio of 3 packs nine real pixels into every CSS pixel, three across and three down. That keeps text and icons the same size as on older phones while making them much sharper.
The iPhone SE, 8, 11 and XR use a ratio of 2, which is why their resolutions are much lower.
Does my resolution change when I turn the phone?
The pixels stay the same, but width and height swap. In landscape, the iPhone 17 reads 2622 × 1206 instead of 1206 × 2622.
Turn your phone now, and the box above updates on its own.
How can I check my resolution with a screenshot?
A screenshot is saved at your screen’s full resolution, so its size is your resolution. Follow these steps:
- Take a screenshot of any screen.
- Open it in Photos and swipe up, or tap the info button, to see its size in pixels.
- On Android, open it in your gallery app and look at Details.
The width × height shown is your phone’s resolution, in real pixels.
Which iPhone has the sharpest screen?
Sharpness depends on pixels per inch, not on the total count. In our list, the iPhone 13 mini leads at 477 PPI.
At these densities, single pixels vanish quickly. On the iPhone 17, at 458 PPI, you stop seeing them beyond about 7.5 in19.1 cm, closer than most people hold a phone.
Work out the density of any screen with our PPI calculator.
What resolution are Android phones?
They vary much more than iPhones. Budget models are often around 720 pixels wide, mid-range models 1080 pixels wide, and some flagships 1440 pixels wide.
Makers name these HD+, FHD+ and QHD+. The plus means the screen is taller than the classic 16:9 shape, such as 1080 × 2400 instead of 1080 × 1920.
What size should images be for a phone screen?
For a picture that fills the width, multiply the CSS width by the pixel ratio. That is simply the phone’s real width in pixels.
For the iPhone 17, a full-width image needs 1206 pixels across to look sharp. For other shapes, our aspect ratio calculator works out the matching height.
For a wallpaper, use the full screen size from our iPhone wallpaper size guide.
Does a higher resolution mean a bigger screen?
No. Resolution counts pixels, while screen size is the length of the diagonal. A phone can have more pixels than a TV many times its size.
To find your screen size in inches, see our guide on how to check your phone’s screen size. For monitors and TVs, read resolution vs screen size.
How does my phone’s resolution compare with a TV?
A phone packs a lot of pixels into a small space. The iPhone 17 has 3,162,132 pixels, about 38% of a 4K TV.
The TV spreads its pixels over a far bigger area, so each one is much larger. A 65 inch 4K TV has about 68 PPI, against 458 PPI on the phone.
What shape is my phone screen?
Modern phones are much taller than a TV. The iPhone 17 is 2622 ÷ 1206 = 2.17 times as tall as it is wide, against 1.78 for a 16:9 screen.
That is why a 16:9 video held sideways leaves bars at the ends. Work out any shape with our guide on how to calculate aspect ratio.
Does a lower resolution save battery?
Drawing fewer pixels takes less work, which is why some Android phones let you lower the resolution. Look for it under Settings, then Display, then Screen resolution.
Brightness matters too. Turning the screen down a little, or using dark mode on an OLED phone, also cuts the power the screen draws.
How do I find the resolution of an older iPhone?
Every model is in the table above, grouped by screen. Each row links to that model’s page, with its size in inches and centimeters.
To see two models next to each other, use our iPhone size comparison. It draws both screens to scale.
How do I check my phone’s refresh rate?
Resolution is how many pixels you have, while refresh rate is how often the screen redraws them. Open our refresh rate test on your phone to see whether it runs at 60 Hz, 120 Hz or something between.
Close other apps first, and turn off low power mode. Battery savers often cap the refresh rate at 60 Hz.
Why do phone screenshots look huge on a computer?
A screenshot keeps every real pixel, and a phone has far more pixels per inch than a monitor. A iPhone 17 screenshot is 2622 pixels tall, while a 1080p monitor is only 1080 pixels tall.
Shown at full size, the screenshot is taller than the monitor. Shrink it with our resolution scale calculator before you share it.

What resolution is the iPhone Air?
The iPhone Air is 1260 × 2736 pixels, at 463 PPI.
Why does the box show two different sizes?
The first line is real pixels and the second is CSS pixels. Browser zoom and display settings can change the CSS size.
Do all iPhone 17 models have the same resolution?
No. The iPhone 17 is 1206 × 2622, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max is 1320 × 2868.
Does a screen protector lower my resolution?
No. The protector sits on top of the glass, so the pixels underneath stay the same.
Is 1080p sharp enough on a phone?
Yes. A 1080 × 2400 screen at 6.5 inches has about 405 PPI, too fine to see single pixels at arm’s length.
Which iPhone has the highest resolution?
In our list it is the iPhone 18 Pro Max, at 1320 × 2868 pixels.
What does FHD+ mean on a phone?
FHD+ means a screen 1080 pixels wide and taller than 1920, such as 1080 × 2400. QHD+ means 1440 pixels wide.
Is an iPhone screenshot the same size as the screen?
Yes. iPhone screenshots are saved at the full resolution of the screen, so they show the real pixel count.
Why does a website say my phone is only 390 pixels wide?
Websites see CSS pixels, not real pixels. Multiply by the pixel ratio to get the real resolution.
Can I change my phone’s resolution?
iPhones cannot. Some Android phones, such as many Samsung Galaxy models, have a Screen resolution setting under Display.
Is a higher resolution always sharper?
Only on the same screen size. Sharpness depends on pixels per inch, which is in the last column of the table.
How we measure
The live numbers come from your browser and stay on your device. PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ the diagonal in inches.
