Why is 3440 × 1440 not 4K?
4K means about 4,000 pixels across, and it is sold as 3840 × 2160. 3440 × 1440 is 400 pixels narrower and 720 pixels shorter.
It is the same height as a 2560 × 1440 monitor, with extra width on each side for a 21:9 shape.
How does 3440 × 1440 compare with other resolutions?
It sits between 1440p and 4K. The last column shows each resolution’s pixel count as a share of 4K.
How sharp is a 3440 × 1440 monitor?
On a 34 inch (86 cm) ultrawide it has 110 PPI. That is close to a 27 inch 2560 × 1440 monitor at 109 PPI, so text looks much the same.
Is there a 4K ultrawide?
The nearest is 5120 × 2160, often called 5K2K. It is as tall as 4K and a third wider, so it has more pixels than 4K.
3840 × 1600 is another wide option, with the full 4K width but less height.
Does 3440 × 1440 need a powerful graphics card?
It has 34% more pixels than 2560 × 1440, so games need more power to hold the same frame rate. It still has 40% fewer pixels than 4K, which makes high refresh rates easier to reach.
How does video look on a 3440 × 1440 screen?
Most video is 16:9, so it plays with black bars at the left and right. Films shot in a wide cinema format fill much more of the screen.
Should I buy 3440 × 1440 or 4K?
Pick 3440 × 1440 for a wide view in games and side by side windows. Pick 4K for sharper text on a 27 or 32 inch screen, and for consoles, which output 16:9.
How big is a 34 inch 3440 × 1440 screen?
The screen is 31.4 in (79.7 cm)79.7 cm (31.4 in) wide and 13.1 in (33.3 cm)33.3 cm (13.1 in) tall. A 27 inch 16:9 screen is 13.2 in (33.6 cm)33.6 cm (13.2 in) tall, so the two are almost the same height.
The body is wider again, with the frame and stand. See measured models on our 34 inch ultrawide dimensions page before you check your desk.
How much desktop space does 3440 × 1440 give?
At 100% scaling you get all 4,953,600 pixels as workspace. Scaling makes text bigger but gives you less room:
- 100%: 3440 × 1440 of space, the full resolution.
- 125%: about 2752 × 1152, if text feels small.
- 150%: about 2293 × 960, close to a 1080p screen in height.
Our resolution scale calculator works this out for any resolution and scale.
How many windows fit on a 3440 × 1440 screen?
Two windows side by side each get 1720 pixels of width, at full 1440 pixel height. That is close to the width of a 1920 × 1080 screen for each window.
Three windows get about 1146 pixels each, which suits a chat, a browser and a document. For more, see our guide to the best dual monitor size.
Is 3440 × 1440 sharp on a bigger screen?
Less so, because the same pixels spread over more space. At 40 in (102 cm) it drops to 93 PPI, and at 45 in (114 cm) to 83 PPI.
A 24 inch 1080p monitor has 92 PPI, for comparison. Larger ultrawides, such as our 45 inch ultrawide sizes, suit sitting a little further back.
Does a game console work on a 3440 × 1440 monitor?
Yes, but not at the full width. Consoles send a 16:9 picture, so it fills 2560 × 1440 of the screen and leaves black bars.
Each bar is 440 pixels wide. If you play mostly on a console, a 16:9 4K or 1440p monitor uses the whole screen.
What should I check before buying a 3440 × 1440 monitor?
Measure first, then check the parts that connect it. These four checks cover most problems:
- Measure your desk width against the monitor’s body width.
- Check that your graphics card supports 3440 × 1440 at the refresh rate you want.
- Read which port gives the top refresh rate on the spec sheet, and use that cable.
- If you plan to use an arm, check the VESA mount size and weight limit.
What does 4K actually mean?
4K is named for a width of about 4,000 pixels. Consumer 4K, also called UHD, is 3840 × 2160, and cinema 4K is 4096 × 2160.
3440 × 1440 falls short on both counts. It is narrower than 4K and has 720 fewer rows, so it only holds 60% of the pixels of a 4K screen.
How does 3440 × 1440 compare with 2560 × 1440?
It is the same height with 880 more pixels across. That is 34% more pixels, all of it added at the sides.
On a 34 inch screen the density is 110 PPI, close to the 109 PPI of a 27 inch 1440p monitor. Text looks much the same size and sharpness, you just get more of it side to side.
How do I set my monitor to 3440 × 1440?
Most computers pick the right setting on their own. If yours does not, follow these steps:
- On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Display, and choose 3440 × 1440 under Display resolution.
- On a Mac, open System Settings, then Displays, and pick the largest option or turn on Show all resolutions.
- Set the refresh rate to the highest number listed, under Advanced display on Windows.
If 3440 × 1440 is missing from the list, try the DisplayPort cable from the box or a newer graphics driver.
Is 3440 × 1440 good for work?
Yes, for anything that needs width. Split in half, each side is 1720 pixels wide, wider than many laptop screens.
Long spreadsheets, video timelines and two documents side by side all fit without overlap. Compare the full body size on our 34 inch ultrawide page before you buy.
Does 3440 × 1440 work well on a Mac?
Yes. At 110 PPI on a 34 inch screen, a Mac shows it at its native size with no scaling. That is the same way it shows a 27 inch 1440p screen.
Connect it with USB-C or Thunderbolt if the monitor supports it, or with an HDMI or DisplayPort adapter. Then check the resolution under System Settings, then Displays.
How do I test a new 3440 × 1440 monitor?
A wide screen has more area to check, so test it in the first days:
- Run our dead pixel test in full screen, on every color.
- Check the refresh rate with our refresh rate test.
- Look at a gray screen for uneven patches near the edges.
Our monitor return rules explain what to do if you find a fault.

How we measure
Pixels = width × height. Share of 4K = pixels ÷ (3840 × 2160). PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ the diagonal in inches.
