The Best Size for Dual Monitors

Updated

For most desks, two 24 in (61 cm) monitors are the best size. Side by side, the screens are 41.8 in (106.3 cm)106.3 cm (41.8 in) wide, and you only turn your head a little to see both.

How wide is each dual monitor pair, and how much do I see?

The width is the two screens only, so add the frames. The angles show how much of your view the pair fills from 24, 28 and 32 in (61, 71 and 81 cm) away.

Size of eachTwo screens wideAt 24 inAt 28 inAt 32 in
21.5 in 37.5 in 95.2 cm 76° 68° 61°
22 in 38.3 in 97.4 cm 77° 69° 62°
23.8 in 41.5 in 105.4 cm 82° 73° 66°
24 in 41.8 in 106.3 cm 82° 74° 66°
25 in 43.6 in 110.7 cm 84° 76° 69°
27 in 47.1 in 119.5 cm 89° 80° 73°
28 in 48.8 in 124.0 cm 91° 82° 75°
32 in 55.8 in 141.7 cm 99° 90° 82°

One screen feels right at 30 to 40 degrees. With two, you look at one screen at a time, so the pair as a whole can fill more of your view.

Are two 27 inch monitors too big?

From 28 in (71 cm), two 27 inch screens fill about 80 degrees, against 74 for two 24 inch screens. That works on a deep desk, but you turn your head more.

Each 27 inch screen alone fills about 46 degrees, which we rate as wide, some head turning.

How should I set up two monitors?

A few habits make a pair easier on your neck:

 1. If you use both equally, put the gap between them in front of you.
 2. If one is your main screen, put it straight ahead and the other to the side.
 3. Angle both inward a little, so they face you.
 4. Set the tops at or just below eye level.

Can I pair a 24 and a 27 inch monitor?

You can, but the mismatch shows. A 27 inch screen is 1.5 in (3.7 cm)3.7 cm (1.5 in) taller than a 24 inch one, so the edges do not line up.

Pixel density differs too. A 24 inch 1080p screen has 92 PPI and a 27 inch 1440p screen has 109 PPI. Windows change size as you drag them across.

Compare the bodies on our 24 inch and 27 inch pages.

What resolution should dual monitors have?

Match the two, so text is the same size on both. Together, a pair gives you this much desktop:

 • Two 1080p screens: 3840 × 1080 in total.
 • Two 1440p screens: 5120 × 1440 in total.
 • Two 4K screens: 7680 × 2160 in total.

Two 1440p screens give the same space as one 49 inch super ultrawide at 5120 × 1440, just with a bezel in the middle.

What do I need to connect two monitors?

Check the outputs before you buy the screens. Run through these checks:

 1. Count the video outputs on your graphics card or laptop, such as HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C.
 2. Check how many external displays the laptop supports, since some support only one.
 3. Match each output to an input on the monitors, and buy the right cables.
 4. For a laptop with few ports, a dock can add outputs, if the laptop supports it.

Do I need a dual monitor arm?

Not always, but it helps on most desks. One arm holds both screens at the same height and frees the space two stands would take.

Check that each arm holds your monitor’s weight without its stand, and that both screens have VESA holes. Our VESA mount size guide explains the patterns.

How do I set up two monitors in Windows or on a Mac?

Plug both in, then tell the computer how they sit on the desk:

 • Windows: open Settings, then System, then Display. Choose Extend these displays, then drag the screens to match your desk.
 • Mac: open System Settings, then Displays, then Arrange, and drag the screens into place.

Pick which screen is the main display, so the taskbar or menu bar appears where you look most.

Is a pair of monitors better than one large one?

A pair costs less for the same space, and you can turn one upright. One large screen has no bezel and needs only one cable.

See our large monitor guide for the single-screen options.

How do I stop the mouse jumping between screens?

The mouse jumps when the screens are arranged wrongly in your settings. Drag the screen boxes so they match the real layout on your desk.

 1. On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Display, and drag the numbered boxes into place.
 2. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Displays, then Arrange, and drag the screens.
 3. Line up the top edges of the boxes if the screens are the same height on the desk.

Can I turn one of my two monitors upright?

Yes, if the stand pivots or you use an arm. A 27 inch screen on its side is 23.5 in (59.8 cm)59.8 cm (23.5 in) tall, enough for a full page of a document.

Turn on portrait mode in the same display settings, under Display orientation on Windows or Rotation on a Mac. Our 100 × 100 VESA page explains which arms fit.

Can I mix brands for dual monitors?

Yes. Any two screens work together, but colors and brightness often differ between brands and panel types.

Set both to the same brightness and color temperature in their menus to make them closer. Matching size and resolution matters more than matching the brand.

Can a laptop be one of the two screens?

Yes, and it is the cheapest way to start. A 15.6 inch laptop screen is 7.6 in (19.4 cm)19.4 cm (7.6 in) tall, against 11.8 in (29.9 cm)29.9 cm (11.8 in) for a 24 inch monitor.

A laptop stand lifts the laptop so the screens sit closer in height. See our large screen laptops guide for laptop sizes.

How should I angle two monitors?

Turn each screen inward so both face your eyes. If you use them equally, center your chair on the gap between them.

If one is your main screen, put it straight in front of you and angle the second one beside it. That keeps your neck straight for most of the day.

Questions

Should dual monitors be the same height?

Yes, line up the top edges so your eyes move straight across. A dual arm makes this easy with different stands.

Do two monitors slow down my computer?

For office work, the extra load is small. In games, most of the work goes to the screen running the game.

Can I use a TV as a second monitor?

Yes, over HDMI. At desk distance, text on a big 1080p TV looks soft, because its pixels are large.

How wide are two 24 inch monitors?

The two screens are 41.8 in (106.3 cm)106.3 cm (41.8 in) wide side by side. Add the frames and any gap from the body widths above.

Do I need a special graphics card for two monitors?

Usually not. Most graphics cards and many laptops have two or more video outputs, but check the number of displays on the spec sheet.

Can I use my laptop screen as a third display?

Yes, if the laptop can drive two external screens as well as its own. Check the maker’s spec sheet for the number of displays it supports.

Should both monitors be the same size?

It is best, so the tops line up and windows keep their size when you drag them across. Matching resolution matters just as much.

Is one ultrawide better than two monitors?

An ultrawide has no gap in the middle, which suits games and long timelines. Two monitors cost less and let you turn one upright.

Can I use one monitor upright?

Yes, if its stand rotates or you use an arm. An upright 24 in screen suits documents and code.

How we measure

Pair width = 2 × screen width. Viewing angle = 2 × atan(pair width ÷ 2 ÷ distance), with both screens flat in one line.
