The Best Monitor Size for a Small Desk
Updated
For most small desks, a 24 in (61 cm) monitor is the best size. Its screen is 20.9 in (53.1 cm)53.1 cm (20.9 in) wide and looks right from about 28.7 in (73.0 cm)73.0 cm (28.7 in) away.
How far do I need to sit from each monitor size?
A monitor feels right when it fills 30 to 40 degrees of your view. The table shows the closest and farthest distance for each size, measured from your eyes to the screen.
How do I work out what fits my desk?
Measure your desk, then follow these steps:
- Measure the desk depth, front edge to wall.
- Subtract the monitor’s stand depth from the table below.
- Add the gap between the desk edge and your eyes when you sit.
- Pick the biggest size whose closest distance is less than your total.
Which monitors have the shallowest stands?
These are the 27 inch and smaller monitors in our list with the least stand depth, from each maker’s spec sheet. The AOC 22B30HM2 needs only 6.7 in (17.0 cm).
Each name links to the maker’s page. Last checked 9 October 2026.
Is a 22 or 24 inch monitor better for a small desk?
If you sit closer than about 29 in (73 cm), a 22 inch screen is more comfortable. Further back, a 24 inch screen gives you more room for two windows without filling too much of your view.
How can I fit a bigger monitor on a small desk?
The stand is usually what eats the space. Three changes help:
- a monitor arm that clamps to the back edge,
- a wall mount using the VESA holes,
- pushing the desk a little away from the wall.
How much space does the stand take?
More than you might think. In our list, stand depth runs from 6.7 in (17.0 cm)17.0 cm (6.7 in) for the AOC 22B30HM2 to 6.9 in (17.5 cm)17.5 cm (6.9 in) for the BenQ BL2283.
That depth comes straight off the space between you and the screen. On a shallow desk, a slim stand can matter as much as the screen size.
Does a monitor arm save desk space?
Yes. An arm clamps to the back edge, so the stand’s footprint goes away and the desk under the screen is free again.
It also lets you push the screen right to the back of the desk, or past it, which adds distance on a shallow desk. Check the monitor has VESA holes in our VESA mount size guide first.
Is a 22 inch monitor enough on a very small desk?
It is the next step down, with a screen 19.2 in (48.7 cm)48.7 cm (19.2 in) wide. It looks right from about 26.3 in (66.9 cm)66.9 cm (26.3 in), against 28.7 in (73.0 cm)73.0 cm (28.7 in) for a 24 inch screen.
For one window at a time it works well. See the sizes on our 22 inch monitor page, or read about the smallest monitor sizes.
Can my laptop be the second screen on a small desk?
Yes, and it saves buying a second monitor. Put the laptop on a stand beside the monitor, so both screens sit at a similar height.
Use a separate keyboard and mouse in front of the monitor. Check the laptop’s footprint on our 14 inch laptop dimensions page if space is tight.
Should I use a desk riser on a small desk?
A riser lifts the monitor toward eye level and gives you a shelf underneath for a keyboard or papers. On a shallow desk, though, its depth takes space in front of you.
Pick one no deeper than the monitor’s stand, so it does not push the screen closer to you.
How do I set up a monitor on a small desk?
A few steps get the most from a small space:
- Center the monitor on your chair, not on the desk.
- Push it as far back as the desk allows.
- Set the top of the screen at or just below eye level.
- Tilt it back slightly, so it faces your eyes.
- Keep cables behind the desk, so they do not take up the surface.
Can I wall mount a monitor above a small desk?
Yes, and it frees the whole desk top. You need VESA screw holes on the monitor and a wall that can hold the screws.
- Check the VESA pattern on the spec sheet, often 100 × 100 mm.
- Mark the height so the top of the screen sits at or just below eye level.
- Fix the mount into studs or solid wall, not plasterboard alone.
Our 100 × 100 VESA page shows which mounts fit.
How do I keep cables tidy on a small desk?
Loose cables take space you cannot spare. A few simple fixes help:
- Run cables through the clip or channel in the stand or arm.
- Fix a cable tray under the back edge of the desk for plugs and power bricks.
- Use a single USB-C cable for picture and charging if your laptop and monitor both support it.
Is a corner desk good for a monitor?
Yes, because the corner gives extra depth. A monitor set in the corner can sit further back than on a straight desk of the same size.
That extra depth lets you go up a size. A 27 inch monitor fills a 40° view from about 32.3 in (82.1 cm)82.1 cm (32.3 in), against 28.7 in (73.0 cm)73.0 cm (28.7 in) for a 24 inch screen.
Should I choose a monitor or a bigger laptop for a small desk?
A monitor gives more screen for the space. It can also sit on an arm or wall mount, leaving the desk clear.
A large laptop makes sense if you also work away from the desk. Compare sizes in our large screen laptops guide and our laptop screen size chart.

How deep should a desk be for a 24 inch monitor?
Deep enough to put your eyes about 29 in (73 cm) from the screen. An arm or wall mount helps on a shallow desk.
Can I use a TV as a monitor on a small desk?
Yes, but a TV’s feet may sit near the ends of the screen. Check the stand width and depth before you buy.
Is a 27 inch monitor too big for a small desk?
It can be, if the desk is shallow. On an arm or wall mount, it fits on many small desks.
Can I put a monitor on a shelf above my desk?
Yes, if the shelf is strong and deep enough for the stand. Keep the top of the screen near eye level.
How deep should a desk be for a 24 inch monitor?
Deep enough that your eyes end up about 28.7 in (73.0 cm)73.0 cm (28.7 in) from the screen. The stand depth plus that distance, minus the gap from your eyes to the desk edge, is the depth you need.
Do monitor arms fit any desk?
Most clamp to the back edge, so the desk needs an edge within the clamp’s thickness range. Check that range on the arm’s spec sheet.
What height should my monitor be?
Set the top of the screen at or just below eye level. You then look slightly down at the middle of the screen.
Is 27 inches too big for a small desk?
Not if you can sit about 32 in (82 cm) from it. A monitor arm helps, because it frees the space the stand takes.
Can I put a monitor on a wall above a small desk?
Yes, if it has VESA holes. Mount it so the top of the screen sits near eye level.
Is a laptop stand and a small monitor a good pair?
Yes. Raise the laptop to the same height as the monitor and use it as a second screen.
How we measure
Closest distance = width ÷ 2 ÷ tan(20°), where the screen fills 40 degrees. Farthest = width ÷ 2 ÷ tan(15°), where it fills 30 degrees.
