8K Resolution Dimensions

8K UHD is 7680 pixels wide and 4320 pixels tall, a 16:9 aspect ratio with 33.2 million pixels, 16 times as many as 1080p. It is also called 4320p.

Drawn to scale in pixels. The dashed outline is 1080p (1920 × 1080).

How sharp is 8K at each screen size?

8K at 24 in gives 367 pixels per inch, against 117 at 75 in. Beyond the distance shown, 20/20 vision cannot pick out single pixels.

Screen sizePixel densityWindows scalingPixels vanish beyond
24 in 367 PPI 300% 9.4 in 23.8 cm
27 in 326 PPI 300% 10.5 in 26.8 cm
32 in 275 PPI 275% 12.5 in 31.7 cm
43 in 205 PPI 225% 16.8 in 42.6 cm

Seen from a desk, 8K looks very sharp at every desk size from 24 to 43 in. On TVs from 55 in up, you sit further back, so the last column matters more. Every size here needs scaling, from 125% up to 300% on the 24 in screen.

Where is 8K used?

8K shows up mainly on large premium TVs and a few professional monitors. Very little film or TV is made in 8K, so most of what you watch is upscaled from 4K. To see the gain, you need a big screen and a seat close to it.

How does 8K compare with other resolutions?

8K has 16× the pixels of 1080p. Each row below divides its pixel count by the other resolution.

8K has about twice the pixels of 5K, the next step down. Nothing in our chart has more pixels.

Resolution8K has
vs 5K (5120 × 2880) 2.3× the pixels
vs 4K (3840 × 2160) 4× the pixels
vs 720p (1280 × 720) 36× the pixels
vs 3440 × 1440 6.7× the pixels
vs 1366 × 768 31.6× the pixels

What does 8K look like with display scaling?

Scaling keeps every pixel but draws text and windows bigger, so you get less desktop space. At 150%, 8K gives the room of 5120 × 2880 with the sharpness of 7680 × 4320.

Display scalingDesktop space
100% 7680 × 4320
125% 6144 × 3456
150% 5120 × 2880
175% 4389 × 2469
200% 3840 × 2160
250% 3072 × 1728
300% 2560 × 1440

Try any resolution and scale in the resolution scale calculator. Phones and Macs work the same way, with a pixel ratio of 2 or 3.

How do I set my screen to 8K?

On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Display, and pick 7680 × 4320 under Display resolution. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Displays.

You only see resolutions your screen and graphics card support. Pick your screen's native resolution, marked Recommended on Windows, or the picture looks soft.

How much data does 8K use?

One 8K frame holds 33,177,600 pixels, 100 MB before compression at 8 bits per color. At 60 frames a second that is 48 gigabits every second, and 115 at 144.

Streaming services and game consoles compress this heavily. Cables carry it uncompressed, so higher resolutions and refresh rates need newer HDMI or DisplayPort versions.

How many pixels is 8K?

8K is 7680 × 4320, which is 33,177,600 pixels in total. That is 33.2 megapixels.

What screen size suits 8K?

On a 24 in screen, 8K gives 367 pixels per inch, and on 75 in it gives 117. Smaller screens look sharper, so pick the size for how far away you sit.

What is 8K at 150% scaling?

A desktop space of 5120 × 2880. Every item is drawn 1.5 times bigger, using all 7680 × 4320 pixels, so text stays as sharp as the panel allows.

How much data is one 8K frame?

100 MB before compression, at 8 bits per color. At 60 frames a second that is 48 gigabits every second, which is why video is compressed.

Does 8K look the same on every screen?

No. The pixel count is fixed, but the pixels get bigger as the screen gets bigger. The table above shows how sharp 8K looks at each size.

How we measure

Pixel density is the pixel diagonal, √(width² + height²), divided by the screen diagonal in inches. Single pixels vanish for 20/20 vision beyond 3438 ÷ PPI inches. Windows scaling is PPI ÷ 96, rounded to a 25% step.
