1080p Resolution Dimensions

1080p (Full HD) is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall, a 16:9 aspect ratio with 2.1 million pixels. It is one of the most common resolutions for monitors and TVs. It is also called FHD or Full HD or 1920 × 1080.

Drawn to scale in pixels. The dashed outline is 4K (3840 × 2160).

How sharp is 1080p at each screen size?

1080p at 24 in gives 92 pixels per inch, against 29 at 75 in. Beyond the distance shown, 20/20 vision cannot pick out single pixels.

Screen sizePixel densityWindows scalingPixels vanish beyond
24 in 92 PPI 100% 37.5 in 95.1 cm
27 in 82 PPI 100% 42.1 in 107.0 cm
32 in 69 PPI 100% 49.9 in 126.9 cm
43 in 51 PPI 100% 5.6 ft 1.7 m
55 in 40 PPI 100% 7.2 ft 2.2 m
65 in 34 PPI 100% 8.5 ft 2.6 m
75 in 29 PPI 100% 9.8 ft 3.0 m

Seen from a desk, 1080p looks clear at 24 in and soft at 27 to 43 in. On TVs from 55 in up, you sit further back, so the last column matters more. Windows runs 1080p at 100% on every size here, so nothing needs enlarging.

Where is 1080p used?

1080p is the most common resolution on desktop monitors and laptops, and the base for most video streams. It suits 21.5 to 24 inch monitors and small TVs. Above about 27 inches at a desk, the pixels start to show.

How does 1080p compare with other resolutions?

1080p has 1× the pixels of 1080p. Each row below divides its pixel count by the other resolution.

1080p has about twice the pixels of 1366 × 768, the next step down. 1440p, the next step up, has about three quarters more pixels than 1080p.

Resolution1080p has
vs 5K (5120 × 2880) 14% the pixels
vs 4K (3840 × 2160) 25% the pixels
vs 720p (1280 × 720) 2.3× the pixels
vs 3440 × 1440 42% the pixels
vs 1366 × 768 2× the pixels

What does 1080p look like with display scaling?

Scaling keeps every pixel but draws text and windows bigger, so you get less desktop space. At 150%, 1080p gives the room of 1280 × 720 with the sharpness of 1920 × 1080.

Display scalingDesktop space
100% 1920 × 1080
125% 1536 × 864
150% 1280 × 720
175% 1097 × 617

Try any resolution and scale in the resolution scale calculator. Phones and Macs work the same way, with a pixel ratio of 2 or 3.

How do I set my screen to 1080p?

On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Display, and pick 1920 × 1080 under Display resolution. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Displays.

You only see resolutions your screen and graphics card support. Pick your screen's native resolution, marked Recommended on Windows, or the picture looks soft.

How much data does 1080p use?

One 1080p frame holds 2,073,600 pixels, 6.2 MB before compression at 8 bits per color. At 60 frames a second that is 3 gigabits every second, and 7.2 at 144.

Streaming services and game consoles compress this heavily. Cables carry it uncompressed, so higher resolutions and refresh rates need newer HDMI or DisplayPort versions.

How many pixels is 1080p?

1080p is 1920 × 1080, which is 2,073,600 pixels in total. That is 2.1 megapixels.

What screen size suits 1080p?

On a 24 in screen, 1080p gives 92 pixels per inch, and on 75 in it gives 29. Smaller screens look sharper, so pick the size for how far away you sit.

What is 1080p at 150% scaling?

A desktop space of 1280 × 720. Every item is drawn 1.5 times bigger, using all 1920 × 1080 pixels, so text stays as sharp as the panel allows.

How much data is one 1080p frame?

6.2 MB before compression, at 8 bits per color. At 60 frames a second that is 3 gigabits every second, which is why video is compressed.

Does 1080p look the same on every screen?

No. The pixel count is fixed, but the pixels get bigger as the screen gets bigger. The table above shows how sharp 1080p looks at each size.

How we measure

Pixel density is the pixel diagonal, √(width² + height²), divided by the screen diagonal in inches. Single pixels vanish for 20/20 vision beyond 3438 ÷ PPI inches. Windows scaling is PPI ÷ 96, rounded to a 25% step.
