Large Computer Monitors: How Big Can You Go?
Updated
The biggest desk monitors are 49 inch super ultrawides, with a screen 47.2 in (119.8 cm)119.8 cm (47.2 in) wide. For the tallest picture, 43 inch 16:9 monitors stand 21.1 in (53.5 cm)53.5 cm (21.1 in) high.
What counts as a big monitor?
Anything from 32 in (81 cm) up is large for a desk. Large monitors come in two shapes:
- 16:9: 32 and 43 inch screens, which are taller and suit 4K work and video.
- Ultrawide: 34, 38, 45 and 49 inch screens, which are wider and shorter.
How wide and tall are large monitors?
These are the screen sizes only. The last column shows where to sit, so the screen fills 30 to 40 degrees of your view.
How big are the largest monitors you can buy?
These are the 38 inch and bigger monitors in our list, widest first. Sizes are the body without its stand, from each maker’s spec sheet.
Each name links to the maker’s page. Last checked 9 October 2026.
How far should I sit from a large monitor?
Further than from a normal monitor. A 32 inch 16:9 screen is best from 38.3 in (97.3 cm)97.3 cm (38.3 in) to 52.0 in (132.2 cm)132.2 cm (52.0 in) away.
If your desk is not that deep, a monitor arm can push the screen back to the wall. Otherwise, a 27 inch screen is the safer choice.
What resolution does a large monitor need?
At 32 and 43 in, choose 4K, or text looks soft from a desk. A 49 inch super ultrawide needs 5120 × 1440 to match a 27 inch 1440p monitor for sharpness.
Is one large monitor better than two smaller ones?
It can be, because there is no bezel in the middle. A 49 inch 32:9 screen is 47.2 in (119.8 cm)119.8 cm (47.2 in) wide, about the same as two 27 inch screens at 23.5 in (59.8 cm)59.8 cm (23.5 in) each.
A 43 inch 4K screen works like four 21.5 inch 1080p screens in a grid. Both have 102 PPI, so text is the same size, just on one panel. Compare with our dual monitor size guide before you choose.
How deep does my desk need to be for a large monitor?
Measure from your eyes to the wall behind the desk. The near end of the comfortable range for each size is:
- 34 in ultrawide: about 43.1 in (109.5 cm)109.5 cm (43.1 in).
- 43 in 16:9: about 51.5 in (130.8 cm)130.8 cm (51.5 in).
- 49 in super ultrawide: about 64.8 in (164.6 cm)164.6 cm (64.8 in).
Your eyes sit in front of the desk edge, so the desk itself can be a little shallower. If the space is tight, see our small desk monitor guide.
How heavy are large monitors?
Heavy enough to plan for. In our list, the Dell P4326QEB weighs 28 lb (12.7 kg) without its stand.
Check that weight against your desk and any arm before you buy. The arm also needs the right VESA mount size for the back of the monitor.
Can I use a 43 inch TV as a monitor?
Yes. A 43 inch 4K TV has the same screen size and pixel count as a 43 inch 4K monitor, so text looks just as sharp.
Check that it has a PC or game mode, and that it accepts the refresh rate your computer sends. See the full size on our 43 inch TV dimensions page.
Who is a large monitor for?
Large screens pay off when you need lots of space at once. They suit these jobs best:
- video and audio editing, with long timelines,
- spreadsheets and dashboards with many columns,
- coding with several files open side by side,
- racing and flight games on an ultrawide.
For a single window of email and web pages, a 27 inch monitor is easier to live with.
How do I mount a large monitor?
Most large monitors work with an arm, but the arm must match the screen. Run through these checks first:
- Find the VESA pattern on the spec sheet, such as 100 × 100.
- Check the arm’s weight limit against the monitor without its stand.
- For a curved or very wide screen, check that the arm lists it as supported.
- Clamp the arm to a solid part of the desk, away from thin edges.
Should a 32 inch monitor be 1440p or 4K?
At 32 inches, 4K gives 138 PPI against 92 PPI for 1440p. Text on the 4K screen looks clearly smoother at a normal desk distance.
1440p is cheaper to drive in games and still fine for video. Our 4K resolution and 1440p resolution pages show each size in detail.
Can a large monitor replace a TV?
It can for one person at a desk. Monitors usually have no TV tuner or remote, and many have small or no speakers.
For a room where several people watch from a sofa, a TV is the better buy. Compare sizes on our 43 inch TV and 43 inch monitor pages.
How do I connect a large 4K monitor?
The connection decides the top refresh rate you get at 4K:
- DisplayPort: the usual choice for a desktop computer.
- HDMI 2.0 or newer: carries 4K at 60 Hz, and HDMI 2.1 goes higher.
- USB-C with DisplayPort or Thunderbolt: one cable for picture, and often power, to a laptop.
Use the cable that came in the box when you can, as it is rated for the monitor.
What should I check when a large monitor arrives?
A big screen has more pixels to check, so give it a few minutes on day one:
- Run our dead pixel test on each solid color.
- Confirm the refresh rate with our refresh rate test.
- Look for brighter or darker patches across the panel with our monitor uniformity test.
- Check the brand’s rules in our dead pixel policy guide before the return window closes.
Is a 49 inch ultrawide a large monitor?
Yes, it is the widest common monitor. A 49 inch 32:9 screen is 47.2 in (119.8 cm)119.8 cm (47.2 in) wide, about the same as two 27 inch screens side by side.
Unlike two screens, there is no gap in the middle. See the full body size, stand depth and weight on our 49 inch ultrawide page.

How we measure
Screen width and height come from the diagonal and aspect ratio. Seats run from where the width fills 40 degrees of view (width ÷ 0.728) to where it fills 30 (width ÷ 0.536).
